Here are some projects and activites that demonstrate me bringing art, empathy, and academics together to make an impact in my community.
North Shore Animal League – VolunTEEN
I have been volunteering weekly at North Shore Animal League since January 2025, caring for both cats and dogs. This work strengthened my passion for animal welfare and continued to inspire my interest in pursuing veterinary medicine.
UC Davis Equine Program
I studied equine anatomy, physiology, and equine veterinary medicine in the UC Davis Equine Science program. Having the opportunity to work hands-on with horses taught me empathy, patience, and respect for animal behavior while strengthening my academic knowledge of the field.
Zoo Medicine & Management Program – Capron Park Zoo, Massachusetts
Participating in the Zoo Medicine & Management program at Capron Park Zoo in Massachusetts, I worked and studied alongside zookeepers and veterinarians to dive deep into the field of veterinary medicine, both academically and through physical experience. I also worked behind the scenes with zookeepers, learning about behavior, training, nutrition, medicine, and conservation.
Scientific Research – UMass Amherst Summer Pre-College Program
I conducted research in the Adler Lab at UMass Amherst, studying disease transmission and self-medication of a specific flower species in bumblebees. This experience deepened my curiosity about biology and the delicate balance of ecosystems.
Rolo’s Story
When my family lost our puppy, Rolo, to a medication that was safe for humans but toxic to pets, I realized how little awareness there is about this danger.
Many human medications include a tiny line of text warning that they’re toxic or even life-threatening to pets, but this warning is often overlooked due to its subtlety. Adding a clear, eye-catching warning graphic on common medications or household products could be the very thing that saves the life of a beloved pet.
I plan to advocate for the urging of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to include clearer warning labels on human medications that are harmful to pets. To support this initiative, I’m researching FDA labeling policies, collecting real-life cases of pet poisoning, and preparing to reach out to both the FDA and local representatives. I also seek to share Rolo’s story online to raise awareness among pet owners and gather digital signatures for a petition.
I hope to expand this initiative by partnering with animal welfare organizations and veterinary professionals to push for stronger labeling requirements and better public education. I want to make my best effort to help prevent avoidable tragedies in families, like Rolo’s.
